About Jeff Hoke
Jeffrey D. Hoke · 1967 – 2009
Jeff taught the drum line in the marching band at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Illinois. I was in it. On the band director’s recommendation he took me on as a private student, and for years after that I went to his house a couple of times a month for lessons.
That’s where this list came from — three photocopied pages, four typed columns, alphabetical by drummer, with his own check marks down the side. 124 records, 44 drummers, 21 of them marked.
He was also the founder and executive director of the LEAP Percussion Organization.
Here is the thing I didn’t understand at the time. Jeff was born in 1967. When he typed this list and started handing it out, he was in his early twenties — not a grey eminence at the end of a long career, but a young man who had already worked out what mattered, written it down, and given it away. He died in 2009, at 42.
